District News from Tasmania
The Order of the Temple in Tasmania
by Ven. Fra. Keith W Hepburn, PP D.G. Secretary.

The first Preceptory in the then colony Van Diemen's land was under a traveling warrant from the Irish Constitution. This was between 1833 - 1856.

In 1879 the Great Priory of England issued a warrant for a Preceptory in Launceston. This Preceptory had a short life and closed during a severe depression in 1886. However, some of its furniture survived. This is still in use St. Andrews Preceptory which received a Charter from the Great Priory of Scotland in 1923 and was consecrated in 1926.

Fifty four years was to pass before a second Preceptory was established in Tasmania. This was City of Hobart Preceptory. Thus the Order became active in both the north and south of the island. The north west region remained without a Preceptory until 1985 when Montgomery Preceptory received its Charter. The way was open for a petition to form a District and this was duly established.

The first District Grand Prior was Rt. Em. Fra. Barkly Pallett who was installed in 1985. He was succeeded by Rt. Em. Fra. Maxwell Linton in 1990 and in 1995 Rt. Em. Fra. Bryce Ward became the third offcer to hold that position. It is interesting to note that no visitors any of the first three installations.

In 2000 we welcomed the then Grand Master, the Most Em. & Rev. Grand Master Roy Scott, GCT and his accompanying Great Priory Officers from Scotland and representatives of mainland District Grand Priories to the installation of Rt. Em. Fra. Kenneth J Milbourne.

It was with great pleasure that we welcomed the Grand Master, the Most Em. & Rev. Grand Master Kenneth D Kennedy, GCT and his accompanying Great Priory Officers to carry out the installation of Rt. Em. Fra. Charles H Smith on Saturday, 16 April, 2005. During the ceremony Rt. Em. Fra. Kenneth J Milbourne was obligated and invested as Knight Commander of the Temple. The following Commissioned Officers were announced by the District Grand Prior and the Commission read by Rt. Em. Fra. David A C Niven, KCT Grand Secretary.
The Most Em. & Rev. Grand Master and Great Priory Officers were accompanied by their wives. The party being 17 in all with 9 Officers and 8 wives. During their week long stay in Tasmania they were entertained by the Fratres and wives of the Preceptory & Priory of St. Andrew No. 55, the Preceptory & Priory of the City of Hobart No. 131 and the Preceptory & Priory of Montgomery No. 154.

We were also honoured with the attendance of Rt. Em. Fra. Eric P Maver, PP, HGP the District Grand Prior of New South Wales together with Em. Fra. John Larsen, HGH District Grand Secretary, NSW and Em. Fra. Robert Armstrong, HGP NSW.
