District News from Tasmania
The Order of the Temple in Tasmania
by Rt Em Fr Keith W Hepburn,  District Grand Prior.

The first Preceptory in the then colony Van Diemen's land was under a traveling warrant from the Irish Constitution. This was between 1833 - 1856.

In 1879 the Great Priory of England issued a warrant for a Preceptory in Launceston. This Preceptory had a short life and closed during a severe depression in 1886. However, some of its furniture survived. This is still in use St. Andrews Preceptory which received a Charter from the Great Priory of Scotland in 1923 and was consecrated in 1926.

Fifty four years was to pass before a second Preceptory was established in Tasmania. This was City of Hobart Preceptory. Thus the Order became active in both the north and south of the island. The north west region remained without a Preceptory until 1985 when Montgomery Preceptory received its Charter. The way was open for a petition to form a District and this was duly established.

The first District Grand Prior was Rt Em Fr Barkly Pallett who was installed in 1985. He was succeeded by Rt Em Fr Maxwell Linton in 1990 and in 1995 Rt Em Fr Bryce Ward became the third officer to hold that position. It is interesting to note that there were no visitors any of the first three District installations.

In 2000 we welcomed the Most Em and Rev Fr Roy Scott, GCT  (the then Grand Master) and his accompanying Great Priory Officers from Scotland and representatives of mainland District Grand Priories to the installation of Rt Em Fr Kenneth J Milbourne as District Grand Prior

In 2005 we welcomed Most Em and Rev Fr Kenneth D Kennedy, GCT  (when Grand Master) together with a large contingent of Great Priory Officers who were accompanied by their wives making a total of 19 in the party for the Installation of Rt
Em Fr Charles H Smith as District Grand Prior

Most recently we welcomed The Most Em and Rev Grand Master David AC Niven, GCT, together with V Em Fr Pringle Johnstone, Grand Secretary and Rt Em Fr John Taylor Past District Grand Prior of Dumfries & Galloway accompanied by Mrs Ann Niven and Mrs Valerie Taylor for the 2010 Installation of Rt Em Fr Keith W Hepburn as District Grand Prior

Commissioned Officers:

District Grand Sub - Prior: Em Fr J McLelland PP HGH
District Grand Constable: Ven Fr G.W. Herbert PP
District Grand Prelate: Ven Fr RO Thorne PP
